Is it costly to do shells and rings? i only ever done this at college but cant see it being that hard?

Reuse the oil squirters just blow them through with an airline.

Parts wise for rings, bearings, seals, oil pump expect to pay between £250-350 depending on source and branding.

IIRC both 9A and ABF have oil squirters, as does the 2E.

So far all the VW lumps I've played with post 86 on the 16v's have squirtes and all the 8v's from post 92. There are exceptions to the rules though where some earlier 8v's have them but that's a general rule you can live by.

standard shells.
I think it was agreed that the tdi shells offer no more protection.
Yeah you need a 16valve oil pump.

Front crank seal
intermediate shaft seal
rear crank seal
windage tray sump gasket of tdi or just a sump gasket
oil pump
mains bearings
thrust bearings
big end bearings
piston rings
enamel engine paint.

Bearings wise no point in upgrading them as they are a non contact item as they are always covered with a thin layer of oil. Reason bearings wear are usually due to too rich a fuel micture making them brittle from fuel in the oil. OIl starvation to blocked up pick up pipe, or inadequat (spelling?) lubrication prior to initial start up.
