Suggestions for a project... Empty Suggestions for a project...

Post by pete_griff Fri May 29, 2009 3:42 pm

Right all, seeing as i'm getting a relatiely sensible daily driver that (touch wood) i won't have to touch ever!

i was thinking of embarking on a project at some point in the future. it may be a while away (though possibly not) and it can be all sorts of things.

my criteria are fairly simple - it must be 4wd or rwd, it must be ridiculously, ludicrously, insanely fast and it must also be (relatively cheap) - chances are it will be done over some time, so it won't have to be too cheap - just no major outlays all at once i guess.

i was thinking along the lines of old style audi quattro with new rs4/rs6 engine in...

i would really like to hear people's suggestions though

let the madness commence!

If I was going for a completely mental project car, rwd, and V8 it would be an old Dodge Charger with a mahoosive Hemi!

But that would only really be fast in a straight line

Get a proper build at home caterham type car then fit whatever engine you want, 330bhp escort cossie was rapid that i drove so half the weight, no tuning hardly reguired to get that power and it will be bomb proof and fast as fooook.

Ridiculously, ludicrously, insanely fast goes hand in hand with low vehicle weight, so either get a big bike or a Caterham as Junkie suggested Very Happy

I've been thinking about Caterham type builds aswell but I don't like the idea of using it infrequently. It makes the work and expenditure seem like a waste, I want to enjoy it every day .... but you can't drive a Caterham every day (unless your commute is <50 miles). Not because of the obvious weather implications, but rather the fact they are uncomfortable on long journeys, very noisy, very cramped and need a fair bit of physical effort to drive. Strictly summer weekend toy only!

I like Beigey's RX7 suggestion. Have you seen the orange one in PPC with a Chevy LS7 lump in it? Makes something like 550hp and 550lb/ft torque, but I believe 85% of that torque is available from <2000rpm. That kind of instant torque at such low revs is what throws you in your seat i.e. ridiculously, ludicriously, insanely fast!

Or how about a Lupo with a comedy mid mounted 24V Turbo? Low weight, high power.... it's the way to go. Not a very manly car mind....

Well now Kev has mentioned it I'm going to say, what about a sports bike? You won't go quicker for the money that's for sure.

A tad on the dangerous side and I know from experience that riding any bike in fog/wet will give you a true sense of vulnerability. I'd have another tomorrow though if I had a garage.

As an idea of what speed is possible, the MotoGP rider Dani Pedrossa recently did 217mph down the main straight at Mugello which is 2mph quicker than the fastest an F1 car reaches during the entire season.

haha - no i don't think so (sorry!)

it's more or less completely standard and it will be staying that way. i'll onbviously be doing some normal and preventative maintenance, but nothing too drastic i hope...

i've always wanted an evo and after getting messed around so much looking at two integras that were total dogs, i thought bugger it - i've always wanted one, the right one came up close to me and the rest is now history!

plus, further to the suggestions above, i've ALWAYS wanted to get my bike licence - only trouble is the unalterable equation below:

Pete + bike = instant, explosive death!

hence why i can justify another fast car like the evo! Very Happy
