16vT Exhaust Manifolds
Well, I was wondering how difficult is it to fabricate an exhuast manifold for use on a 16vT, or indeed any turbo type application (1.8T, VRT)? I would imagine a log type tubular manifold would be relatively easy, but what about equal length manifolds? Can you tacl stainless together with a MIG, and then get someone to TIG it up properly?
Re: 16vT Exhaust Manifolds
I used stainless with my stock headers on my VR,2mm thick walls,i made it up as i went along and tacked it together with a mig then got it tiged up.
Not difficult at all just time consuming,i should have made it a divided manifold but it should not affect it that much.
Never failed yet

Re: 16vT Exhaust Manifolds
What grade of stainless should I be getting and what diameter? Can you get pre-bent sections, and if so where from?
Re: 16vT Exhaust Manifolds
you can make an all mild manifold, mild flange, ss pipe, ss tube, 304, 304h, 316, 316h, 321, inconel etc,it all depends on budget and most of my stainless parts are from solid-fabrications.co.uk they will give you a good deal on bulk buys.
The thicker the stainless walls the better ,i used 304 1.5mm thick with mild steal flanges, still no signs of distress.

Re: 16vT Exhaust Manifolds
crikey, looked at some of those prices and they stack up veeeeeeeeeeery nicely against any manifolds i've seen for sale!

Re: 16vT Exhaust Manifolds
I think I'm going to give it a go at making one. I think I'm going to struggle with the flange that goes onto the head though...
Re: 16vT Exhaust Manifolds
it's the way to go dude. Don't worry about the flange just cut it off an old manifold and get on from there

Any news from your CAD drawing mate, James? No hurry, just wondering if he could do it?mrbeige wrote:That'd be good, cheers dudeCorradoVR6-Turbo wrote:my mate does cad drawings,i will see what he can do.

Re: 16vT Exhaust Manifolds
You could have both flange plates profiled from plate steel, ie Laser or water jet. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] i once had a flange made up for a vauxhall 2.0 16v 4 branch a while a go, i paid a £1 per minute of machine time + the cost of the material,
If your going to mock up with Mig before some one will Tig finish it, i would use stainless wire and high purity argon to do so as it will be a lot stronger and better for the dude who is going to weld it all up for you as it all needs to be spotlessly clean when getting Tiggy with it. the gas can be bought in small bottles enough for tacking up, and the wire again can be bought in small 250-500g spools.
