G60 timing Empty G60 timing

Post by Flusted Fri Jan 09, 2009 6:28 am

Just timed my engine, temp abouve 70, rev 3 times above 3k, unplug BTS, then shine strobe on bottom pulley with gun set to 6 degrees.
Why is it when you plug the BTS back in, the timing line moves towards the front of car? is that advancing it on idle?

Just curious really?

I think that it's actually retarding the timing, as the spark is occurring later, thus the timing mark is seen further on the rotation of the pulley. If you blip the throttle, you'll see it move in an anti-clockwise direction IIRC Wink

so although 6 degrees adanvce with bts unplugged, when i plug it back in, it retards it more?

Been scratching my head allday about advance, you want the spark later for more power but its called advancing, moving the lead away from the rotor?

Nah, you want the spark earlier for more power. It's advance of TDC. So if the timing mark on the pulley is to the left (back of the car) of the mark on the block that is advance i.e. sparking before TDC, if it is to the right (front of the car) that is retarded, i.e. sparking after TDC

I suppose that makes it clear as mud?

that make sense! so it is retarding it when i plug the BTS in.
So you turn the dizzy on a 16v opposite to drive direction for advance, bringing the lead contact closer to rotor arm
