Windage trays/sump baffles
Now, I know that it is wise to use the TDI windage trays to help to reduce the frictional loses incurred with the crank hitting the oil in the sump and also reduce the amount of 'frothing' of the oil and thus improve the oil delivery in the engine, but I found that 8v's have a plastic sump baffle that clips onto the bottom of the oil pick up. Will this do the same job as the windage tray and also help to prevent oil surge and starvation? Or, can you in fact use both if required?

Yes you can run both! The plastic attachment is a budget keep the oil in the vicinity of the pickup. The windage tray is there to keep the crank free of oil and stop oil surging up the sides of the block. Worth having just for the reusable thicker seal but you will need longer bolts and be careful tightening up the bolts that go into the alu. end plates as pulling the threads is easy done. I have experience, can you tell!

and the windage tray doesnt clear the 16v oil pump.
I trimmed mine and you wont be able to use the black bit either.

Oh! well you can fit the 8v plastic baffle, which is smaller, and the windage tray.

errrrm? ^^^^^^ I always fit windage trays on every engine I've build and never ever had to chop one?!?!?!?! You do realise you fit the windage tray and then the pump don't you?
Also those plastic ones get brittle loose their ability to fasten to the pick up pipe and succesfully melt themselves to the crank when they let go. Wouldn't touch em with a barge pole.

Re: Windage trays/sump baffles
that's odd, KR 1.8 16v's have a plastic oil baffle type thing, can't remember exactly but looks slightly smaller than the one shown. That fits fine with the windage tray.
and I've had a windage tray on a KR and a 2L 6A block with no problems, certainly no cutting!
one question though, why does the diesel need a windage tray when they are so low revving, does the crank throw further into the sump or something?

Diesel cranks are 95.5mm stroke, so I'd imagine so, and the counter weights may well be even longer still...davidwort wrote:one question though, why does the diesel need a windage tray when they are so low revving, does the crank throw further into the sump or something?

Good to see you here David...
I can't remember what is on my 16v now... I bought a GSF pump and it had a tiny little plate if I remember rightly, I think the original one might have been knackered.

Yep the aftermarket plastic plates are more to keep oil round the pick up as opposed to acting as a windage tray hence so small. As for windage trays on diesels mrbeige hit the nail on the head with regards to the counterweights reaching further down.
