Ok, so I now have my Garrett T3 turbot, but it needs a rebuild. Is this something that I can undertake myself? I know you can buy turbo rebuild kits, but will it be necessary to get the turbo balanced after fitting the kit? If I can do the rebuild myself, where is te best place to buy the kits from?

Ah, that's good then. I'll get one of those kits then. I guess genuine Garrett is the way forward?

The guy I got the turbo off knows a bloke who can balance it for me too.

While your in there also fit a 360 degree thrust bearing and stagger ring oil seal.I did this on my spare Garret T3/4 and have had no problems.
I got all the bits off eBay in the uk.
Be extra carefull when you want to tighten the retaining nut on the end of the turbine shaft, use strong thread lock aswell.
I've got photos of the rebuild, includind the 360 degree bearing but i don't know how to upload.

Cool! I found a Garrett full rebuild kit, for not a lot, including the thrust bearing....not so sure if it included the stagger ring oil seal or not, but I' guess so. Did you get yours balanced after fitting the kit?

If you want to, do a little 'how to' on rebuiilding a turbo, as I think that could be valueable to the site and it's members....especially me Laughing

If you want to do a right-up as a thread, and email me the pictures, I will add them to the thread for you. Alternatively, I did a thread on how to add pictures to your posts, see here

Allrite stu,
No,the 360 degree bearing came as a small kit.
If you using a Garret T3 it'll have a 270degree bronze thrust bearing.
i think the original seller(Rapsold Racing) also moved to south Afrika, shame because it was a good little kit.
Try on eBay in the UK,the company who supplied me the small and very fragile stagger gap oil control ring are English, the problem is that i've bought sooo many bits off various places that i don't remember the names!.
Remeber also that these kind of mods are only needed if your pushing the turbo to it's limits,as in the case of the T3 you'll be okay with 1.4/1.5Bar press.
I'm going to hook up my old lap top and transfer the various photos onto this more modern version.
Cheers.

I don't expect to be pushing the turbo to it's limits....well, not to start with Laughing

I'll have a browse on eBay and see what I can find.

You can get kits from Radesigns. They sell Melett kits.. Used them on my K24 to rebuild it. Just marked it all up before taking it apart. May balance at a later date.
