Aye. I did manage to get it sealed ok, but the valve that goes on the wheel for pressure was leaking slightly too!!

Going to get Carleena to use the pedal I think!

Well, two steps forward and three steps back - it appears that sometime in Gooney's past, someone has attempted to undo the N/S front caliper bleed nipple with a hammer Sad Tis knackered, and seized Sad

So, going to fit the 280s that are left over from Badcrumble.....the discs I have are almost new, but need some pads. EBC red stuff should do the trick I think (Well, I thought I'd give then a go)

The hammer.
An essential but ofter misused tool. Smile

Could you not easy-out it and then get a replacement bleed screw?

I could do possibly, but can't guarantee that it wont snap off completely when I try. Bigger brakes are good though Smile and the look in far better nick than the 256s on there.

Spoke to Crazy again today. Discount negligible due to order quantity, so have ordered direct. £63.33 inc. the vodka and delivery Smile

Spoke to one of hte guys here about seizing bleed nipples, and although some copper slip on the threads would help, he suggested brass bleed nipples.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] do brass fittings, just need to check diameter and pitch of thread tonight...

Discs, pads and calipers on, but not connected the lines yet, as I'm short of a brake pipe spanner.

Nice to get some more substantial brakes on there!

Might have broken my 3/8th ratchet though Sad Methinks I need a proper breaker bar!

Re: Gooney - being reborn

Post by mrbeige on Sun Mar 21, 2010 12:16 pm

Lines done, but seem to be having bleeding issues...again. I'm so crap at bleeding brakes! Need to have another go tomorrow evening if it's light enough.

On the other hand I've refitted the head-lining, so it looks like a car again on the inside.

I have discovered two problems though;
1) I can't indicate right - I suspect the contacts on the stalk to be knackered
2) The engine revs seem to hunt a little bit and when you 'blip' the throttle, it takes an age to return to idle. The throttle butterfly seems free enough, as does the paddle on the metering head. It does seem to run a little rich too, so it doesn't rev up cleanly. Any suggestions?

Tried cleaning the ISV, but that made no difference. Feels like over-fuelling to me. What about the warm up reg??

Can you get hold of another isv to check to rule that out completly?

My brake system always just seems to need multiple bleeds. Also if you have an abs pump once you have it nearly right you might want to engage the abs with sopme hard braking and then re-bleed.

All my clothes smell of brake fluid from the amount of times I have done this recently.Tedious. Crying or Very sad

Dunno, but that's a good idea.

I've borrowed a one way valve attachment for a brake bleeding hose, off skidmark. With a bit of luck, I'll have some more luck bleeding tomorrow.

Luckily I don't have ABS, so that's something I don't need to worry about

Laughing

you have to laugh.
At least you have got to the bottom of it.Not a bad idea to replace a few lines anyway.just awkward squirming around on your back if you decide to do it yourself.

Re: Gooney - being reborn

The offending line was one of the main lines from the front to the back, and burst just in front of load proportioning valve. So, as I don't feel like dying any time soon, I'm replacing all the lines for the back. They all look fairly knackered to be fair. I don't fancy risking it and indeed, they may well be an MOT failure anyway. Some of the lines were a total arse to remove. I ended up cutting some of them. I have an almost new load proportioning valve to go on, and some copper pipe, so just the unions to get. Ordered a pipe flaring tool and pipe cutter off eBay yesterday. Draper items, £23 and £6 respectively. Should be here within a day or two.

You can buy the genuine VAG stuff from VAG, it's only £10 for 5m lengths too and keeps the original green coated hardline.

I suspect the lines on the project car might well be an MOT failure so thats another job for me to do (will get it MOT'd first though).

Don't forget you can find the hard line lengths on ETKA so it save guessing..

My front to backs were ok.I replaced the two lines at the rear of the car between the regulator and the flexi lines just under the rear beam.
I used a double flare tool but used the reverse side of it to make a convexed flare like the oem lines.

Ok, so the additional axle flexible lines turned up from Goodridge and it appears they've sent me a full 6 line kit (normally £95) for the price of two line kit (paid £33)!!

So, done nothing since April (my bad). Not looking forward to fitting the new brake hardlines, that's for sure.

Need to pull my finger out really. My daily lift to work is moving house at the end of August, so time is definitely running out. A case of 'have' rather than 'want'!

So, seriously thinking of selling up. How much is he worth, if I stuck 12months MOT on it?

I'm thinking £400 as is without an MOT??
