G60 of loooooooove baby.
Most of you know my G60. It is both one of my life's loves and one of the biggest thorns in my side! But today I have finally got around to starting whatever it is I'm now doing. Still not entirely sure where to stop with this project or how far I want to go with it. Quite happy with the progress I've made so far though!

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
That intercooler looks fairly full of schitt!! Hampering performance I would guess.
So do you have any idea what your plans are? Full renovation? Engine fettling? Body mods? Interior?
I reckon seeing a G with a charge cooler would be nice.....

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
I like the fact that my car is so standard. Lots of people would probably think that is boring but I'll most likely keep it that way.
Reckon it will be a pretty thorough renovation by the time I'm finished with it. I don't plan to have it back on the road until next year. Really need to sit down and get a list written up. Truth of the matter is though even then things will no doubt crop up that I hadn't counted on.
Either way I think that intercooler really just needs to go in the bin....

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
You not thought to improve on the engineering that VW has satrted for you? I.e. you don't want to fit a front mount intercooler, or some such like?
Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
There probably are plenty of people that are capable of improving upon vw's engineering. I'm not so sure I'm one of them!

Well, mate, this is the whole point of the OddUnit. You don't need to be an expert.....I'm certaining not....
Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
restoration and repair is also good though. You can learn alot just understanding and repairing what vw gave us.
Have you got a fault list mr riot?

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
I have a fault list.
1. Intercooler f*cked.
2. Rattly top end. Needs investigating.
3. Leak from flange on right hand side of cylinder head. doesn't sound like much but so far all attempts to fix have failed.
4. Clutch overhaul required. New clutch, master and slave cylinders. Maybe replacement gear box.
5. Everything is covered in 18 years worth of sh!t.
6. Sump gasket has gone.
Other than that everything engine wise i in pretty good shape but no doubt as I take things off I'll find things to add to this list. Just going to give it a good overhaul.
I may add some uprated parts. Really not sure yet. We'll see. In terms of more ponies I don't really want anything too drastic.
Can anyone recommend a decent intercooler for a start?
Toad mentioned fmic but I'm afraid I have no idea what he meant by that!

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
FMIC = Front mounted Inter Cooler
As far as which one to go for, it depends on how big you want it and where/how you are going fit it. I've never bought one, so can't offer any advice on that, but I'm sure reasonable universal ones can be bought from eBay, for example.
Rattly top end could just be the tappets. Have they ever been changed? How many miles has the engine done?

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
Yeah, I'm fairly certain it is the tappets. That's what Darren said when it was last at G-Werks too. The engine is on the best part of 125k and they've never been changed. Gonna whip the head off shortly and plan to strip it down and give it a good going over.

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
Sounds like a good plan. You could fit new guides and stem seals while you're at it. Was reading an article in PPC a while ago about how to change the guides yourself. Quite clever really. It involved a heat gun, a freezer and a turned down long bolt.

Hmmmm.... sounds interesting. Got to be worth a look. I'm intrigued by the use of a freezer though.
Little update from this evening:
Just removed discs and pads up front:

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
The new guides go in the freezer to make them contract, so they can be pushed into place easierSonicriot13 wrote:Hmmmm.... sounds interesting. Got to be worth a look. I'm intrigued by the use of a freezer though.
Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
Oh, if you haven't already and need to, you should put the wheel back on so that you can undo the hub nut! I didn't loosen it off when I broke Badrcumble, and so couldn't actually undo the bloody thing
Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
Yeah, just thought that myself as I was putting the pictures up. They are bast*rds of the highest order to get off. Was thinking to just put it in gear but when I thought about it properly I realised that will just turn the engine over!

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
With regards to the FMIC (and especially if you wnt to kep it looking stock) you'll need to be on the look out for a Golf G60 one (with the pipework that goes with it). They are very easy to fit to the Corrado G60. Rallye ones can also be used with a littel modification, and again look stock.
The only problem with these is the cost though - you're looking at £400-500 when they come up....

Thanks for the input guys. I'll have to weigh up the options.
Right, this is what it looks like now:

Slowly getting there. Hopefully I will be able to get the head off by next Sunday.

No.
It's cool mate don't worry. I know where it all goes. Plus I take millions and millions of pictures as I go so I know where every last little nut, bolt and connection goes. Works a treat. Or I just phone Toad.
I'm actually quite looking forward to tidying that lot up. Think it will make the world of difference.

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
So which stud was missing out of the downpipe? One of the most difficult to reach, by any chance?
Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
No, not difficult to reach at all. It's not missing at the downpipe end of the manifold. They were fine. It's one of the 8 studs in the cylinder head that bolts through the manifold to hold it in place. If you were looking at the back of the engine it would be bottom left corner. There may well be others missing too but I haven't poked around yet. I just want to get hold of another cylinder head I think. Mine's fecked.

Re: G60 of loooooooove baby.
Pics from the latest morning's work. I have Wednesday off so will get some more stuff done then. Need to get the subframe off to see how crap it is and get the alternator off and start stripping down the left hand side of the engine.

It's coming along nicely now. Getting a bit sick of finding rust everywhere though.

I may have one available at the end of the summer it was rebuilt professionally and has done 4000 miles to date. It's totally stock. It cost me £250 to have rebuilt plus the cost of purchase £90. You would need to fit new tappets as I'll be keeping them and your cam along with new seals and gaskets etc. Check out [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] for images and info.
ctwg60 wrote:I now have a reconditioned head a polished rocker cover and schrick cam all other bit's and pieces are ready to go on. Going on a little trip first with the Corrado to the Nürburgring for the 20th Anniversary of the Corrado but when I get back out will come the old engine!
Some Pictures.

It's had new guides and seals, all damaged stud holes repaired, seats and valves recut, refaced, hot tanked to get it clean bead blasted and painted. You can have it for £225 plus postage if your interested.
