I used the Brembo standard vented ones from GSF! They were perfectly fine.....and not ridiculously expensive Wink

Thats interesting to know - I am running Pagid 421's and they are shocking when cold, which they are most of the time given my driving style.

i seem to be wearing through the 288 brembo discs from GSF that i put on the front of mine very quickly, they seem pretty soft given the wear thats showing after only about 3k miles on them.. thats with red stuff pads though - dont know if they are "too much" for the discs?

Tarox 40 groove crack under heavy use. I use vw discs with either Ferrodo DS2500 or Mintex 1144 pads, along with large brake ducts. They've stopped me many times from 170+ without warping! Very Happy

I'll look into the ducting, any images?

I have only heard bad things about the blackdiamond discs, no positive stuff at all.

Ferodo DS2500 all the way too.

James H are you also running silly small brakes in consideration of the power you have, speeds you are capable of and running those 13" wheels.

I have it on good authority they resist warping well, I know the downsides of BD discs.

Sorry no pics of ducting. I just got some 3" plastic induction pipe and ran it from the fog light aperture to the arch liner, and angled it towards the caliper.

I run 239 vented discs with 1144's for drag/road Exclamation use, but if i'm doing a top speed run i change to 280's with DS2500's.
I'm hoping to do some hill climb/sprints this year so i will be upgrading to a wilwood kit. Keeping it 280's though.

What was the stopping distance though?

Been there and done all this and they just fade and warp, so I'm afraid I don't believe you Very Happy

Razz Smile
I agree if you were circuit racing they would fade and warp, but thats not what i do! I use them(280's) for top speed tests at Bruntingthorpe only, and need maybe 1/2 mile to slow down. The fact is, if you want brakes for racing you've got to buy racing brakes!! ie ££££££'s! Try AP Racing and have a blank cheque ready!

I used to warp 280s and 312s (VW and Audi discs) regularly under 'normal' road use, which can only be down to one, or both, of the following:-

1) I drive like a kn0b Laughing
2) A Corrado VR6 is a lot heavier than a MK2 Golf

I stuck mine on a weighbridge a while ago and it's a rather portly 1320kg in full road trim and a full tank of gas.

The only way I've been able to totally erradicate fade (other than slowing down) and warp is to use AP Racing 4 pots + 330mm x 28 discs. I use either Ferodo DS2500 or Pagid Grey, depending on season.

If I kill brakes on the road, I'd hate to think how many I'd get through on a track day!

I do tend to come off downhill slip roads at 140mph occasionally, and stop the car within a couple of hundred yards....so yeah... I think 1) is the main reason Very Happy

I love powerful brakes too much.... more than acceleration sometimes Cool

I think I warped these zimmerframes when I decelerated rather quickly from 90ish to about 50ish to avoid a speeding ticket. I still got the ticket but not for doing 90+, thank god. But was congratulated on my forward vision and reactions! I think they used the term "very impressive"! Laughing

Re: Biggest brakes for 15inch rims??..

Post by kevhaywire on Wed Apr 15, 2009 8:21 am

Yeah if you stand on the pedal from those kind of speeds, the very rapid heat build up exceeds the disc's ability to shift it quickly enough, not enough surface area, plus stock discs are only, what, 22mm thick?
James H's ducting is a very good idea! Very Happy

Obviously some discs are better than others in those situations but if it's any consolation, I used to warp Zimmermans just by taking them out of the box Very Happy They were well known for warping when I used them in the late 90s.

I reckon a 28mm thick 280 or 288 disc with an alloy bell would help enormously with warping problems. The alloy bell will offset the weight increase of the extra thickness and the alloy bell will transfer heat into the road wheel more efficiently and also allow the iron to grow, preventing warpage!

Apparently Tarox G88 resist warping as they are warped by the manufacturer and then re-machined. So say Venom Motorsport! They also said BD discs have a 12 month warranty against warping. I still cancelled though. Guy seemed helpful and they don't sell Tarox so that might even be true! I don't know what to do now. So maybe if I get my old vag discs re-machined which weren't very worn they will last a bit longer! Worth a try!

Cheapest price for skimming discs on the car is £99+vat, I'm sure it could be done on a simple lathe though off the car. New VAG discs are £52! Can't get DS2500 for Girling G60 calipers and pagid grey I'm struggling to find.

I think one day I'll get some cash together change to 16" wheels like cheap team dynamics lightweight wheels and get the Corrado G60 AP Racing setup, looks like fun but really fooking expensive, about £1700!

Pagid greys (RS15 from memory) you wont get for those callipers. They are a very specialised pad and only make them for certain callipers - mainly their own. I couldn't get them for my Boxster ones for example. Boxster S brakes and 305mm Seat Ibiza Cupra R disks are a good combination and alot let than £1700. They will be fine under some 16" rims, especialy the lightweight race ones - I have Compomotive MO's for example and I'm now running 315mm discs with Boxster callipers with no clearance issue.

Has anyone considered fitting floating discs? That would eliminate a lot of the vibes from any inconsistancy in the discs due to slight warping and give a more consistant feel under heavy breaking.

Obviously this is what they do on a motorbike to try and give as true a braking feel as possible as the last thing you want on a bike is wheel wobble under any kind of braking, but a bike and rider probably circa 300kgs so a cars weight might just rip a set of floating discs apart.

No you can get floating discs for cars. AP Racing do do some sets, but it's a case of how much do you want to spend, and a set of AP racing replacement discs are like £350-400. But yes your right.

I would mostly like a set of mintex 1144s for my 288 conversion. Where's the best place to buy them from.

I also have a set of early arch liners and brake cooling ducts, I will mostly be fitting these to the VR, and repositioning the horns slightly.

This place lists them for Mk3 Golf 288mm vented discs, might be worth giving them a call and seeing if they're in stock?
