legless and topless.......

Post by peanut on Fri Dec 05, 2008 3:54 am

something a little different for me here....
Came across the base by a stroke of luck, was working at a customers house and noticed the cab parked on the drive looking a little sorry for itself. Got chatting and it turned out it was his daughters summer toy that had sat for a while as shed been given an extortionate quotefor some mot work. Nigh on 500quid to replace drivers wishbone and top mount EXCLUDING parts. Left mu number and offered to do the work for the cost of parts and a beer.
Anyhoo, transpires she just wanted shot so i ended up buying it.
Never had an audi cab before and never really considered one tbh but it was cheap and thought itd be a bit of fun for next summer.
Heres how we picked it up...

Audi cab 2.0 8v, manual hood, fsh, 2 owners...and now me...

initial plans were too just drop it and stick some wheels on.
Well its kind of spiralled a little from there.... Embarassed

Decided early on that i wanted to convert to 5 stud to give me more options when it came to rimmage choice.

Relatively straight forward in theory, after a lot of buggering about managed to source some front hubs and legs from sal.

The front legs were also needed as we ordered a set of Kw variant 1's and they build the front coilovers aroiund your legs. Im planning to to slot in an aby s2 lump at some point in the non too distant future so ordered aby s2 spec fronts and cab rears

et voila...

Tried to source an rs2 front bumper but just couldnt at a sensible price, so sourced a replica from reiger made from abs, got to say the quailty is very very good. Quick trial fit also showed to fit was spot on too, much better than i though itd be.
Only ballache is it doesnt come with mounting brackets so ill need to fab something up there.
Ive got a pic on other pc so ill ad that later

The cab came with stock blue cloth interior, although in really good condition didnt really do it for me.

The hunt was on for some cow hide 😉

Not one bloody breaker in the uk had a cab in with leather ( very few had cabs in full stop)

Started to look further afield (read ebay.de)
Found a guy selling cream (ecru) leather in der farterland Very Happy but the front seats were borked (which suited me fine anyway as i fancied something different upfront)
Managed to strike a deal out with ebay where we didnt buy the front seats and they were winging theyre way on a pallet to good old blighty

Speaking of which....Nikki sourced a beige leather recaro interior for her corrado a few mths ago and we refurbed it to look like new. I prefer the colour of the corrado cream to the audi ecru so ill be dying the leather this colour.

Was looking at different options for front seats as an alternative to the stock audi bum perches and we came across these...

Porsche 911 turbo front seats.

They sit very low in the pics but in reality theyll sit higher once ive sorted the subframes
Apart from the drivers bolster covers being badly worn the bolsters themselves are in really good condition and are extremely comfortable.

Ill need to make some custom subframes and source the wiring loom for them but i think theyl be spot on once theyre in.

Indeed. So what is the first port of call? Get the hubs and suspension on?

That's probably for the best....I've done a list in my Gooney thread, and...well....that doesn't seem to be going too great.... Sad

Have you worked out the CVs you need to get? Might be worth 'asking the audience'??

looks essentially like an audi 80 cab ?!??

Nice cars, just sold my audi on ebay.
A guy came to pick it up from latvia Laughing

It needed some work for the mot but he said "In my country no problem"
They handle really well,an excellent base if you do add power later imo.Looks like it will be a cool summer crusier too.

I must admit, cabrios aren't really my thing, but it's made me think how easy it must be to work on the interior with no roof getting in the way. Smile

in stock form they handle like a bag of spuds, ive had countless 80's 90's coupes. Theyre a bloody heavy car but with the added advantage of the engine fitted longtidude they can be set up to go round bends quite well. Its possible to move the engine and box forward slightly so the weights directed more over the front wheels.

They eat wishbones and top mounts on pretty much a yearly basis.

nor mine if im honest matey, only ever had a mk1 golf cab before and it was crap. Cold, rattly, cold...didnt go round bends, could actually see the car flexing in places when i gave it some beans...and it was cold (albeit with a 2.0 8v) but i just fancied something a bit different and more importantly fun and this sort of fitted the bill. It was either this or corrado number 13 Embarassed
