*** This has been moved from another forum so if it don't make sense in parts please ignore. Cheers Chris ****

Hello,

Seems like the place to be for my build. This is an Audi 3A block based engine. It's commonly referred to as a bubble block as it's effectively a 1.8 pb code or similar casting with enough room for a 92.8 mm crank.

Bit of history.......

I bought my G60 back in Sept 2005 and spent lot's of money restoring and replacing the brakes suspension and running gear ...

Picked this 166k 1.8 valver up from Gav and Nikki, for the princely sum of 300 squid. To say I'm pleased is an understatement! Engine sounds sweet as a nut and the interior is mint. First job is to get it MOT'd then we'll see what changes take place....

Ok, so now that the Corrado is going to be used as a bit of a track weapon, I need to think about tyres and brake pads.

As we want to be able to drive the Corrado to the track, any tryes need to be road legal. I have little/no knowledge of what is best for the track, so what tyres are the best for track use?

What about brake pads? Again, they don't need to be superb on the road, but of course good on the track. Would Ferodo DS2500 be track worthy? What about EBC red-stuff?

Just been thinking about something Tom said to me the other day about one guy fitting a mk4 head gasket to a VR. He said that it increased compression ratio by 0.5, and that led to an improvement in torque. I been thinking about why that was, and determined that all it does is improve thermal efficiency, and thus make more from the existing fuel air mixture. I did wonder what would happen if you were to increase the compression ratio a further 0.5. Do you think that would improve things still, ...

Been reading the latest Evo magazine, im which they looked at the new cloverleaf Alfa Mito which has a new 1.4 engine featuring what they call MultiAir. It features a head with vaves laid out like a DOHC head, it's only 1 camshaft though with lobes for both inlet and exhaust, sat above the exhaust valves.

It has a set of pushrods from the inlet lobes to the front of the head. These pushrods work on what is effectively a set of modified hydraulic tappets, there is an electronically ...

As far as I know the late US VR6s got a plastic inlet manifold with variable geometry, much like the R32s and 24Vs. Now, this should be retrofittable to the older VRs, I assume they just need an adaptor for the throttle body, and a little bit of piping making up?

Does anyone know anything about these? Do they suffer from the same flap fatigue and engine ingestion issues that the BMWs do?

This is probably more useful to coilover owners because of the frequent height changes. i.e. Rather than using a spring compressor, you can just wind the spring perch down to relieve the tension before taking the TMs off, but that messes up your settings.

You can get various camber tools, such as this one - http://www.advantagewheelalignment.com/camber_gauge.html

The Beige fella has been after me for a while now to stick a project thread on this car up here! Hadn't got around to it, mainly because I cant get the damn car to actually work....and I pretty much threw the towel in last summer. But things could all change tomorrow.......

To start off with I had a perfectly sensible 1.8L 16v Corrado.

Kept it pretty standard for a couple of years. Then went for a full respray, as the oul Tornado red was starting to turn a couple of different shades ...

DTA for Dummies

Thought I'd put up some mapping details for DTA ECUs.

I'm focussing on the S80 since it's one of the current models, but the older E48 and P8 Pro are very similar.

My aim (hopefully) is to demonstrate that there is no black art to engine mapping. If you understand your engine and it's fuelling requirements, you will have no trouble mapping it yourself.

The following maps are from my TPS v RPM map which I tuned myself on the road. 440cc injectors, 3 bar static pressure.

Many ...

Larger injectors or rising rate fuel pressure reg

Right, I was thinking the other day about the above, and pondered on whether smaller injectors with a rising rate fuel pressure reg would give better results than larger injectors? I would expect that idle would be much improved doingthe former, and still being able to deliver the larger quantities of fuel when required. Does that make mapping difficult though? Will a rising rate fuel pressure reg only give you a benefit when running standard ECU rather than aftermarket? Are standard fuel rail ...

MIG Welders??

Right, I'm thinking I need to purchase a MIG welder, but need tow know what I should be looking for. I want one for general bodywork use and for spot welding stainless pipework, ready for someone to TIG weld up. Do I need gassed or gas-less? What current rating should I be looking for? Etc.

Not MS, but chip related....

Given I have a selection of chips laying around now from different stages of having my G60 tuned, someone has suggested I get hold of a copy of Winols, and an eprom programmer from ebay and actually have a look at them and see how they differ. Been thinking about this, and an eprom programmer is only £40 or so from ebay, and the demo version of Winsol (which is read onyl, no writey writey) is free. Is it really as simple as that guys? Anything I should look out for with eprom programmers?
